If your Instagram followers are dropping suddenly, several things are usually happening at once: Instagram reviews and removes accounts and interactions it considers suspicious, some accounts disappear or get deactivated, and some people simply unfollow. On top of that, since late August 2026 there have been public reports of a new period of instability in Instagram follower services, with follower losses, slower deliveries and price changes.
In this guide we explain what may be happening, why not every drop has the same cause, what happened in previous years and what you can check if you have an order in progress.
Why Instagram followers drop: the short answer
A drop in Instagram followers usually comes down to one or more of these reasons:
- Instagram's checks: the platform detects accounts and follows it considers suspicious and may remove them.
- Accounts that no longer exist: deactivated, suspended or deleted profiles stop counting as followers.
- Normal unfollows: people who choose to stop following you, which happens to every account.
Your follower count only shows the end result. It doesn't tell you which of these causes made the difference, and they often overlap.
Instagram follower instability in 2026: what's going on
Since late August and throughout September 2026, users have publicly reported follower losses, slower orders, interrupted deliveries and higher prices than before.
These reports point to a period of instability, but it's worth being precise: there is no official announcement from Meta confirming a specific update as the single cause, and not every service or account is affected in the same way. Some people notice significant losses, while others barely see any change.
Why am I losing followers on Instagram? The possible causes
Instagram reviews suspicious accounts and interactions
Instagram runs checks to detect accounts and interactions that don't look authentic. In December 2023, Instagram announced tools for creators that move followers it considers possible spam into a separate review inbox and let you remove them in bulk.
These checks can apply at two moments: when new followers arrive and later on, to followers who were already on the account. That's why, during periods of instability, some of the followers you receive may not stay.
Deactivated, suspended or deleted accounts
When an account that followed you is deactivated or deleted, it disappears from your list. This happens all the time, including on accounts that have never used growth services.
People who unfollow you
Changes in your content, how often you post or simply people's interests mean there will always be some unfollows. They are normal and don't point to any problem with your account.
Instagram updates and followers: not every drop has that cause
It's easy to blame any drop on "the Instagram update", but that isn't always the case. A loss can have several causes at the same time, and the number on your profile can't tell them apart. That's why we recommend not drawing conclusions from the counter alone.
Does losing followers mean my account is penalized?
Not necessarily. A drop in followers, on its own, doesn't prove your account has been sanctioned. Instagram can remove followers it considers suspicious without taking any action against the account that had them.
To talk about a penalty you would need other signs, such as notices from the platform itself or visible restrictions on your account. Without that information, the sensible approach is not to assume there is a block or a limitation.
Losing followers and losing reach are not the same thing
They are two different things that can happen at the same time:
- A follower drop affects how many accounts follow you.
- A reach drop affects how many people see your posts, and it depends on many factors: your content, posting time, competition in the feed or changes in how Instagram shows posts.
You can lose followers without losing reach, or the other way around. If you notice both at once, it's best to look at them separately.
Instagram follower delays: why your order is taking longer
During a period of instability several things can happen at once: fewer options are available, delivering followers becomes harder and some orders move more slowly or pause from time to time.
Even so, not every delay is caused by Instagram. Each order has its own status, quantity and delivery conditions. To understand what's happening with yours, it's more useful to check its specific status than to assume a general cause.
Why Instagram follower prices are going up
It can seem contradictory for prices to rise right when the service is working worse. The general explanation is simple: when there is less availability and it becomes harder to complete orders and keep the results, costs go up.
One important point: a higher price doesn't guarantee there won't be any losses. Price and stability don't always move together, and paying more for a service doesn't protect it from Instagram's checks.
There is also no way to guarantee that prices will return to previous levels, or when they might change.
An order moving again doesn't mean everything is fixed
This is probably the most important lesson from previous episodes: deliveries coming back is not the same as followers staying.
An order can complete normally and then show losses days or weeks later. So the fact that deliveries resume doesn't prove that the followers will stay.
Likewise, one single order isn't enough to say that every service has stabilized. Stability shows when, over a long enough period, three things happen:
- Deliveries complete consistently.
- Later losses decrease.
- Included refills are handled according to their conditions.
Instagram follower refills: what they are and their limits
A refill means sending followers again to make up for losses, as long as it's included in the conditions of the service you ordered. Not every service includes a refill, and each one has its own conditions.
It helps to understand what a refill doesn't do:
- It doesn't stop new drops from happening.
- It doesn't guarantee a permanent follower count.
- It doesn't mean recovery is instant.
If your order had losses, first check whether the service you ordered includes a refill and under what conditions.
Symptoms, possible explanations and what to check
| What you notice | Possible explanations | What you can check |
|---|---|---|
| Your followers drop suddenly | Instagram's checks, deleted accounts or normal unfollows, alone or combined | When the drop started and whether it matches a recent order |
| Your order is taking longer than usual | Lower delivery capacity or interruptions during the period of instability | The order status and its delivery conditions |
| The order completed, but then you lost followers | Followers that didn't stay after Instagram's review | Whether the service includes a refill and under what conditions |
| The price is different from before | It's harder to complete orders and keep the results | The current price and service description before ordering |
| Your likes or views are going down | Changes in reach, which are different from losing followers | Your post insights, separately |
Not the first time: what happened in 2024, 2025 and 2026
In recent years, similar episodes have been reported around August and September. These references come from public user reports, not official statistics, and they describe experiences that weren't always the same.
2024
From August, different users described interrupted or limited deliveries. Some were still reporting issues in September and November, and changing Instagram's follower review settings didn't fix every case.
2025
In August there were reports of interruptions, losses and higher prices. Some messages announced a recovery, but in October other users were still describing significant losses after receiving their followers, even though some deliveries had already resumed.
2026
From late August and throughout September, reports of losses, delays and price changes appeared again.
The pattern repeats around similar dates, but that doesn't mean there is an official schedule, that it happens exactly once a year or that it always ends in the same month. Each episode has played out differently.
How long can the instability last?
There is no universal, reliable timeframe. In previous years, recoveries were uneven and some people reported problems that continued for months. Using those cases to predict a date in 2026 wouldn't be honest.
If someone promises you an exact date for things to return to normal without clear confirmation, take it with caution.
Will follower services disappear?
The current instability doesn't prove these services will disappear. What can change are the options available, prices and the conditions of each service. That's why it's a good idea to check the current description and conditions before each order.
What you can do in the meantime
There is no instant fix that works for every case, but there are concrete steps that help you understand your situation:
- Check your order status in the Orders section.
- Write down dates and changes: when you placed the order, when it completed and when you noticed the loss or delay.
- Review the conditions of the service you ordered, including refill coverage if it has one.
- Don't blame every change on a single cause: normal unfollows and reach changes exist too.
- Contact SMMClub with your order ID to request a review.
- Avoid new purchases just to cover losses before clarifying what happened with your previous order.
- Don't take recovery dates for granted unless they are confirmed.
Frequently asked questions
Why am I losing followers on Instagram?
It can be due to Instagram's checks on suspicious accounts, accounts being deleted or deactivated, or normal unfollows. They often combine, and the counter doesn't show which one mattered most in your case.
Is Instagram removing followers?
Instagram removes accounts and follows it considers suspicious, and that can lower an account's follower count. However, not every loss comes from that review.
Does this mean my account is penalized?
Not on its own. Losing followers doesn't prove a sanction; that would require notices or visible restrictions from the platform itself.
Why have prices gone up?
Because during these periods there is less availability and it costs more to complete and keep orders. Even so, a higher price doesn't guarantee there won't be losses.
Why is my order taking longer?
There may be lower delivery capacity, interruptions or order reviews. To know what's happening with yours, check its status and message us with the order ID if you have questions.
Do lost followers come back automatically?
Not always. Only services that include a refill cover losses, and always according to their conditions. Check yours or ask us.
How long can the instability last?
There is no confirmed date. In previous years, some issues lasted for months and recovery wasn't the same for everyone.
Has this happened in previous years?
Yes. There are public reports of similar episodes in August and September of 2024 and 2025, besides the current one, although each played out differently.
If deliveries resume, does that mean everything is fixed?
Not necessarily. Receiving followers again doesn't guarantee they will stay. Stability is confirmed over time, when later losses go down consistently.
In short
There have been periods of instability around similar dates for several years, but each episode can play out differently. Follower losses, delays and price changes have different explanations, and there is no single date or fix that can be promised for every case.
